Top Safety Accreditation for System Uvex

System Uvex Ltd is one of the latest group of successful companies to join a leading edge scheme, designed to help industry improve its safety record.

System Uvex recently received accreditation from SAFEcontractor, a programme which recognises very high standards of health and safety practice among UK contractors. The company's application for SAFEcontractor accreditation was driven by the need for a uniform standard accross the business.

John Kinge, Head of Risk at SAFEcontractor said "Major organisations can no longer run the risk of employing contractors who are not able to prove that they have sound health and safety policies".

"More companies need to understand the importance of adopting good risk management in the way that System UVEX has done. The firm's high standard has set an example, which hopefully will be followed by other companies within the sector".

Under the SAFEcontractor system, businesses undergo a vetting process, which examines health and safety procedures and their track record for safe practice. Those companies meeting the high standard are included on a database, which is accessible to registered users via a website, www.safecontractor.com

Latest UVEX delivered to UK Datacentre

System UVEX has recentlly delivered the latest UVEX equipment to a facility in the UK. The unit is another development of the UVEX concept of low chemical, UV based water management - automatically controlling cooling tower water, to allow continuous safe operation of the tower.

This latest model is the UVEX-TS and is a two pump system. In normal operation the two systems are integrated, that is the UV, filter and main pump do most of the work, but included is a once a week secondary biocide dose via the second pump. This arrangement, which is fully programmable, allows easy amendment of the treatment regime to suit different load conditions in the cooling tower water.

However each pump system can also be run independently (of each other), this means if a problem occurs, there is back-up treatment instantly available. This is a real advantage in critical cooling systems and extra peace of mind for facility management engineers.

Whole Foods - a natural approach to water management, naturally!

American super brand Whole Foods has recently opened their flagship store in Kensington, West London. The purpose built supermarket, the first of forty planned for the UK, is 80,000 square feet spread over three floors. It boasts an in-house bakery offering thirty-five varieties of bread, a cheese room, a wine department, a salad bar, an Indian takeaway section and even an in-store pub, The Bramley.

The company's motto is "Whole Foods, Whole People, Whole Planet". They strive to adopt this philosophy across all aspects of the business. Whole Foods demonstrate their commitment to the environment in many ways including the limited use of packaging on their products, paying customers to supply their own carrier bags; providing facilities for glass, tin, paper and plastic recycling; offering waste coffee grinds for customers to use on their garden and using a wind power supplier to offset 100% of electricity consumption.

It is only natural then that System Uvex would be chosen to supply an energy efficient heat rejection method for the refrigeration displays within the store. The system used comprises four stainless steel Evapco cooling towers and a System Uvex water treatment unit, which offers reduced energy costs and natural water management.

System Uvex - creating a safe solution for stunning sculpture

System Uvex Ltd has been appointed to maintain the water used in The Navigators sculpture by landlords St Martins Property Management.

David Kemp, one of the UK's most famous and talented artists, was commissioned to create the sculpture in 1987 at a cost of £250,000. Situated in London at the Hay's Galleria, a piazza with huge iron columns supporting a magnificent clear-glass panelled roof, The Navigators provides a stunning focal point. Sixty feet tall and weighing fourteen tonnes the bronze and welded steel structure with motors, pumps, water jets, several fountains and kinetic features makes The Navigators a popular attraction.

This inventive and moving sculpture serves as a reminder of days gone by when the giant tea clippers landed their cargo at what was in the 19th century a wharf in the pool of London. From the artists perspective The Navigators represents “the ships, the monsters and the men that drove them”.

In recent years the sculpture has operated on “high days and holidays”, the potential health and safety risk preventing the owners from running The Navigators continuously. That risk has now been removed through the installation of a bespoke water management system from System Uvex.

The new system will process 16,000 litres of water an hour. Using filtration, energy efficient ultra violet disinfection, closely controlled chlorine dioxide dosing as a potable biocide and corrosion inhibitors System Uvex will provide the complete package to monitor what is going on in the water at all times.

St Martin's Property Management (SMPM) can now rest assured that the 33,000 litres of water required to operate The Navigators will be clean and safe enough for children and adults alike to splash their fingers in.

Andrew Bousfield from SMPM comments, “We are delighted that this amazing sculpture can now be seen in its full glory, as it was meant to be. People are attracted to water, the sound of moving water draws us and then we feel compelled to touch it, in the past the quality of the water has given us cause for concern.

The water management solution provided by System Uvex will ensure the water is totally safe and free from potentially harmful bacteria and that the structure will not suffer from the effects of corrosion. System Uvex has nearly twenty years experience of providing environmentally friendly and energy efficient water management solutions for blue chip clients. The have a long standing relationship with SMPC and were the natural choice for us.

We want people to enjoy The Navigators safely for many years to come, for it still to be around in the 22nd century - a part of the rich maritime history associated with this area of London.”

Successful shopping centre keeps cool

The Dundrum Shopping Centre is a major town centre development in one of Dublin's most affluent suburbs. Comprising an area of 250,000 square metres with over eighty shops and restaurants on three levels, underground car parking, a cinema complex, office blocks, hotel, residential areas, theatre and educational facilities it is one of the premier developments in Europe.

System Uvex has been involved in the water management of the Centre since it opened in 2003. McCarrick Woods Consulting Engineers specified System Uvex for the project. The first System Uvex unit was installed at this time with the capability to process 7,000 litres of water an hour. Due to the continuing success of the Dundrum development System Uvex was recently commissioned to install a second System Uvex water management system capable of processing 3,500 litres of water an hour.

System Uvex play an integral part in ensuring that the water used in the two cooling towers at this successful shopping centre is safe and free from potential harm.
